Thank you, Othelia!

The Master by Othelia Goossen Vacura

"…He played a melody, pure and sweet
As sweet as the angels sing…"
~from The Touch of the Master's Hand

Othelia,
What a wonderful gift you gave to each one of us. Thank you so much!
Here is the rest of the poem, The Old Violin:

'Twas battered and scarred,
And the auctioneer thought it
hardly worth his while
To waste his time on the old violin,
but he held it up with a smile.
"What am I bid, good people", he cried,
"Who starts the bidding for me?"
"One dollar, one dollar, Do I hear two?"
"Two dollars, who makes it three?"
"Three dollars once, three dollars twice, going for three,"
But, No,
From the room far back a gray bearded man
Came forward and picked up the bow,
Then wiping the dust from the old violin
And tightening up the strings,
He played a melody, pure and sweet
As sweet as the angel sings.
The music ceased and the auctioneer
With a voice that was quiet and low,
Said "What now am I bid for this old violin?"
As he held it aloft with its' bow.
"One thousand, one thousand, Do I hear two?"
"Two thousand, Who makes it three?"
"Three thousand once, three thousand twice,
Going and gone", said he.
The audience cheered,
But some of them cried,
"We just don't understand."
"What changed its' worth?"
Swift came the reply.
"The Touch of the Masters Hand."
"And many a man with life out of tune
All battered and bruised with hardship
Is auctioned cheap to a thoughtless crowd
Much like that old violin
A mess of pottage, a glass of wine,
A game and he travels on.
He is going once, he is going twice,
He is going and almost gone.
But the Master comes,
And the foolish crowd never can quite understand,
The worth of a soul and the change that is wrought
By the Touch of the Masters' Hand.

Dr. Robert John Hughes

Note from Julie:
Today as I was thinking about the good time that I had this weekend at our class reunion, I was wondering what happened to our beloved Dr. Hughes. I found his obituary online and thought I would share it here.
As I started to read the obituary, I told KT that I'll just bet he wrote his own obit. Then as I read on, I saw where he had left the date blank to be filled in later. I just love how he worded his birth and death--"Robert J. Hughes, Jr... was born into this Present Evil Age" and "…he was born into The Coming Age through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ."
"He continued living in these two ages until [date to be supplied] when he left this Present Evil Age to continue life in the Age to Come for eternity."

Just reading his obituary reminded me of how special it was to have him for a Bible teacher while we were at Berean. Please share any memories you have of Dr. Hughes in the comment section--I would love to hear them. He was truly on-in-a-million!

"My Life Since 1968" ~ Arvin Busenitz

"My Life Since 1968" ~ Arvin Busenitz

Can anyone help me out and tell me why writing this reminds me of Mrs. Schmidt? The next memory is the once a week nightmare of the ten most unwanted words out of the Readers Digest. I guess those words were invented to instill character. As I look back on English class the Monday morning quiz about Sunday's sermon was very impressive. When I get my nerve up I would like to thank Mrs. Schmidt.

After I got over high school stress, I signed up for Grace Bible Institute. I went there for one year. Uncle Sam looked at my grades and said, "I want you." I signed up with Gospel Missionary Union in Smithville Missouri. I worked there for nine months then moved to Malaga Spain for the remaininer of my 2 years.  While in Spain I helped missionaries move to Moracco. I sure did see a more clear view of the great comission. I traveled through Europe on the way home. That is when you could travel with room and board for five dollars a day.

I came back to Kansas to farm.  I kept one eye open at all times for Miss Right. Sometimes they say it is love at first sight. Well it was.  I knew instantly that Kathy was the one. We married in 1977. We are blessed with three girls and one boy. We now have 3 grandchildren. They are lots of fun.

In 1996, we auctioned off a collection of antique and new generation John Deere tractors.  We sold 125 tractors in one day. People came from 17 states. It was a blast.

In 1997,  I was asked to take 8 horses from Kansas to Alaska.  I thought that would be a good adventure of driving, camping, and hauling horses. Taking a 3600 mile trip had never been in my dreams. We and the horses survived the trip in 6 days.  A few years later, God said, "I would like you to move some missionaries from Missouri to Alaska."  That got the Alaska call going in high gear.

We volunteered at Victory Bible Camp a few summers.  Then Duayne King (founder of Kingdom Air Corps in Sutton, Alaska), said, "I want you."  Kathy and I are looking forward to our eleventh trip to Alaska this July. If any of you groove flying or just breathing cool Alaska summer air, come and see us.

I am grateful that our son Jason, his wife, and girls will hold down the farm while we are gone. By the way, farming is my main habit. We fill in the spare time.

I want to thank the Berean teachers for teaching me a Biblical worldview.

Special thanks to Bill Cornish and Therman Entz for teaching me how to drop an eraser from the top pipe of the register in Mr. Penner's class without electronic remote control. It is hard to believe that technology was accomplished 50 years ago.

God bless you all real good. Keep spreading God's Word.
