Today as I was thinking about the good time that I had this weekend at our class reunion, I was wondering what happened to our beloved Dr. Hughes. I found his obituary online and thought I would share it here.
As I started to read the obituary, I told KT that I'll just bet he wrote his own obit. Then as I read on, I saw where he had left the date blank to be filled in later. I just love how he worded his birth and death--"Robert J. Hughes, Jr... was born into this Present Evil Age" and "…he was born into The Coming Age through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ."
"He continued living in these two ages until [date to be supplied] when he left this Present Evil Age to continue life in the Age to Come for eternity."
Just reading his obituary reminded me of how special it was to have him for a Bible teacher while we were at Berean. Please share any memories you have of Dr. Hughes in the comment section--I would love to hear them. He was truly on-in-a-million!

For those of you who are not on the Facebook class of 1968, here is Roberta's memory of Dr. Hughes:
ReplyDelete"One strong memory happened on a sunny day, a “normal” school day. We settled into class, and Dr. Hughes asked us, “How do you know there is a God?”. Most hands went up and we started our litany of reasons. To each answer, Dr. Hughes would give a contradictory response about why that was not a valid answer. As this continued, fewer students wanted to speak, knowing he would not validate the reasoning. I remember being shocked that my Bible teacher was questioning the existence of God! Finally, I believe Robert Busenitz was the only one brave enough to debate with Dr. Hughes. Even he failed to give a reason that would be accepted. After an uncomfortable silence, Dr. Hughes began to speak of Faith....acceptance of God by Faith alone.....the Faith that is the foundation of our relationship with the Living God. What a lesson—-one that still applies as I reach out in simple Faith to the God who is enough. Thank you, Dr. Hughes, for making me confident enough in Scripture to depend on “Faith Alone..”."
